Unit 1 Project Self-Assessment

We just finished learning about three stages of revision: conceptual concerns, organizational concerns, and surface-level concerns. Which of these stages is your primary concern for your Unit 1 Project at this moment? Post a comment here explaining where you will focus your attention during your next round of revisions, noting which specific questions you will focus on and why you believe dealing with these questions will be the most efficient use of your time.

  1. Basically, I'm still in the conceptual stage. I have my draft sort of written, but it's not really very logically developed. It also probably doesn't completely explain both sides of the argument despite the fact that I say that I'm going to be discussing both sides in my thesis statement. I guess I'm having a hard time figuring out what information would be important to my audience and what is just superfluous. Also, I feel like I may need to find some new articles that better support the argument I am trying to make.

  2. I think I am at the organizational stage of revising my draft. I know that I am going to argue the ethical issues behind egg donation and manipulation, and more specifically the social or socioeconomic ethicalness of this procedure and its possible consequences. I am confident in my argument and the information that I have to back it up, I just need to figure out a logical and clear way to present it all, which is why I believe that I am in the organizational stage of revision.

  3. I believe that right now I am at the Organizational stage of revision. I am confident in my overall argument and audience connection, but I feel I may be lacking in my method of order. I want to focus on making sure I have effective transitions and clear topic sentence relations in my paragraphs. I may possibly need to reorder some of my information as well.

  4. I need to focus on making sure all my paragraphs are relevant to my thesis. The topic I'm writing about has so much information that I feel some of my paragraphs are showing too much detail and not making my argument quite as clear as I want. Revision is my main concern. I need to get rid of some stuff and restructure some sentences or paragraphs so that they help my argument and make it as clear as possible.

  5. I am still focused on the conceptual concerns of the revision of my unit 1 project. I need to gather more evidence for my side of the claim and develop a more differing stance from that of the Nature article. My tone is weak. I am also dealing with some organizational concerns, especially the logical order of my paper. The draft is very rough and has a long way to go. I think it will be best to focus on the conceptual concerns first and deal with logic and order afterwards. It will be easier to rearrange the content once it's all there than to try to insert it in its proper place later.

  6. I think I'm at the organizational stage. At this point, I'm sure of the argument that I want to make and what kind of evidence I want to use, but I want to make sure that I'm happy with the organization of the paper. I think that the structure overall makes sense and flows well, but I also think I should reread it to be sure. I also need to make sure that each paragraph is specifically giving an idea and developing it fully. I think that focusing on the structure will be most efficient because I know that my argument won't change, and so the way it's presented (structurally) will be the most important factor in how a reader would react to it. Also, I can't focus on editing and making sure I'm happy with all of the specific sentences or words used until I'm sure that these are there paragraphs I need, and that they're in the right order.

  7. I believe I am still in the conceptual stage for my draft. I had a very hard time forming an argument against my article because the thesis statement of the original author was so vague and the article qualified a lot of concepts rather than completely agreeing or disagreeing. Also, because the topic of the article is morality, it is difficult to find scientific evidence to support either side of the argument. I think I need to look at the article again and try to chose a claim that will allow me to argue against it using scientific data rather than opinions.

  8. My primary concern at the moment is somewhere between conceptual and organizational. I know the main argument I am trying to develop and the topics I want each paragraph to be about. I just need to elaborate and analyze some parts of my argument further. I also want to make sure each paragraph is clearly organized in a manner that relates back to the thesis. I also lack an introduction with the exception of the thesis and a conclusion. I will focus on trying to build an intriguing introduction and conclusion as well as the question of does each paragraph address one issue and relate back to the thesis. This will be the most effective use of my time since the reader will not be able to understand my argument if the organization is not there. My argument is based mostly on logos and if the argument is out of order, it will be much more difficult to follow.

  9. I am currently between conceptual and organizational concerns on my Unit One Project. I have figured out how my body paragraph are going to prove my thesis for the most part, but it is difficult to integrate the secondary sources into the paragraphs to articulate a well grounded point and back up my claim. I have written an complete intro paragraph and body paragraph but I am still in the process of trying to figure out how I will structure my other body paragraphs and use my evidence to support my claim.

  10. I think I am at the "organizational concerns" stage or revision. I understand my topic, I know what exactly I am writing about, and I no longer feel overwhelmed. However, I am having trouble making the paper flow, finding the right words, and my organization just doesn't seem right yet. I also need to get rid of some stuff that I now see is not needed in the essay.

  11. I think I am in the organizational stage. I have two very long body paragraphs and an intro and conclusion. I organized it like this because I have two main ideas that I want to discuss--there is so much to talk about with my topic so I wanted to narrow it down to one aspect of it. For the next revisions, I will focus on figuring out if I need to break apart my paragraphs and also if I need to lengthen my paper. (It is only three pages.) I need to focus on if my paragraphs are coherent, have a topic sentence, and relate to the thesis. I need to see if my paper is logical and easy to read and follow, or if it is confusing and only makes sense to me. I also need to see if there is a balance between my two body paragraphs-am I providing the same amount of support and input for both of them, or is one topic getting more information and time than the other?

  12. I think that I am still in the conceptual stage of my paper. I have a thesis but I am not sure how to argue it well or how to present evidence in a way that doesn't seem repetitive. I'm also not sure why exactly my audience would care about topic, and am having a hard time trying to make it relate and therefore my tone in this project-blog-thing is much different from the tone that I took in my other blog posts. I feel like I've got some major outlining and reevaluating to do before I will feel that the paper is written well.

  13. I feel like I need to focus on the conceptual concerns of my draft. There is so much information on my topic it seems easily to fall off topic because every branch has interesting information but I need to make sure I stay focused on my thesis. I will go back and focus on making sure each of my paragraphs contain only one topic and that they clearly relate back to the thesis. I feel like my argument is very strong, but I fear the central claim may be lost in all of the other information. I will need to do some cleaning up before Tuesday for sure.

  14. I'm in the cenceptual stage still. I have my information and everything, but I'm still trying to find the right tone to use. My target audience would be people looking to go into agricultural research but if I'm to be consistent with my other blog posts I need to keep the post a bit more on the light side. But the issues I talk about with this post are also very dense since it's a lot about the bureacracy surrounding the topic. So I've had trouble striking that balance.
On the organizational level though, I am also still trying to decide when I need to just separate ideas. They all fall under three main categories, but they need to be further separated into several sub'-categories to make it easier to understand. And I need to identify where these breaks would be.

  15. I'm still at the conceptual stage of revision. I've done some research, but I am still having issues developing a concrete thesis and argument in order to base the paper off of. I think that I want to write about how an increase in global poverty is causing an increase in global hunger, but I don't know if that argument is directly related enough to the topic of my Nature article. I'm not sure if this means I should scratch this draft and start over, or if it might just take some adjusting.

  16. I am in the organizational stage of my paper. While I feel that I know exactly what I want to write about, the order and paragraphing of my draft seems to be a bit confusing and not as focused as I would like it to be. In addition, I need to go over the basic organizational issues of making sure all my topic sentences follow my thesis statement, etc. I think that the organizational stage right now for me is probably going to be stage that going take the longest time to complete.
